No "line of defense" for National Day flower beds in parks

Over 2.2 million flowerpots will be placed in 11 municipal parks to welcome the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, and over 60 flower beds will be laid. On the morning of June 30, Beijing Municipal Administration Center of Parks (BMACP) announced flower bed designs and ecological arrangements for the National Day celebrations. Reporters learned that more flowers will be planted in honor of this National Day than for any other major event organized since the founding of the People's Republic of China, and almost double that planted for Beijing Olympic Games.

Chinese roses and chrysanthemums will be mainly planted

Over 60 flower beds will be laid in the 11 parks for the National Day, said Zhu Yingzi, vice director of the comprehensive management division at the BMACP. Red and yellow, the colors of the national flag will be adopted as the main hues for these arrangements. Beijing's city flowers -- chrysanthemums and Chinese roses -- will be planted as the centerpiece, said Zhu, adding that "chrysanthemums will be planted for the yellow, and Chinese roses for the red."

Zhu also said that over 2.2 million flowerpots have been planned for ecological arrangements in the 11 municipal parks for the National Day. "More flowers will be planted for this National Day than for any other major event staged since the founding of the People's Republic of China, and nearly double that planted for Beijing Olympic Games."

Large "three-dimensional flower bed" designs will be used

The National Day flower beds this year will mainly adopt a traditional style. "All key flower beds will use flowers, grass and seeds, except for the frameworks which will be made from other materials," Zhu said, adding that most of the previous celebratory flower beds looked like lonely sculptures and that residents were only allowed to admire them from a distance. Large "three-dimensional flower bed" designs will be used this year, and residents will be allowed to admire the flower beds up close and take photos. In addition, no security lines or railings will be set up around flower beds in the parks.

The work of laying flower beds for key parterres in the municipal parks recently started. It is expected that the work will be completed around September 25.
