Photos taken by LIFE magazine. American friend Carol said it's hard to believe that was only 1940 - 1949. It looks like 100 years ago, compared with today's Beijing.

the arch at Dong Jiao Min Xiang (formerly called Legation Quarter) It was demolished.

3 Arches in front of Coal Hill. They were demolished in 1950s.  The souch arch was reestablished in 2004.

viewing the Qian Men at the rear and Golden Water Bridges in the front. At the time Tan An Men Square not yet established.
