Don Giovanni

NCPA Opera Don Giovanni

Venue:Opera House
Dates:November 27-December 01, 2018

About

From Molière, Byron, Pushkin, Alexandre Dumas to Merimee, the story of Don Giovanni came down in these European literary giants’ writings for nearly 400 years. In 1787, Mozart wrote the opera Don Giovanni based on Lorenzo da Ponte’s libretto, portraying a bold and romantic Don Giovanni who defies convention. With fantastically dramatic music, Mozart creates a lively dramatic atomsphere, and brings the characters of different classes, identities and personalities to life.

The NCPA production of Don Giovanni is in homage to this classic that has been spread and sung for over two centuries. Music Director of the NCPA LÜ Jia will render the essence of Mozart’s music. After Lucia di Lammermoor, director and set designer Yannis Kokkos joins the NCPA production again to elaborate on how the licentious nobleman is punished, revealing the “avant-garde” sense of the opera when Mozart lives. Many domestic and foreign singers that have an outstanding performance in Mozart’s operas will gather together to present the unique charms of the composer's music.

Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Synopsis

Spanish nobleman Don Giovanni, who is promiscuous in relationships, covets the beauty of the Lord’s daughter Donna Anna. The aged Lord is killed in a duel with Don Giovanni, and Anna, as well as her fiancé Don Ottavio, swears to revenge her father.

In the street, Don Giovanni encounters Donna Elvira, who was abandoned by him before, and makes his get-away with Leporello left to face the embarrassing scene.

Soon later, Don Giovanni meets young farmer Masetto’s fiancée Zerlina and captures her heart with blandishments. As Don Giovanni will have his way, Donna Elvira tells Zerlina to get away from him, a liar.

Donna Anna and Donna Ottavio discover the whereabout of Don Giovanni. While Don Giovanni is holding a dancing party in his palace, Donna Anna, Donna Elvira and Don Ottavio attend the party in masks, and bring to light Don Giovanni’s act of murdering the Lord.

Don Giovanni and Leporello see the Lord’s statue in the graveyard. Don Giovanni asks Leporello to invite the statue to the attend the dinner in his palace. Don Giovanni sits alone at the table after returning to his palace, and Donna Elvira begs this heartbreaker to stop being promiscuous in relationships, but he remains unmoved. Just when Donna Elvira is leaving, the statue arrives. It requests Don Giovanni to repent and mend his ways, but he digs in his heels. In a violent rage, the statue drags Don Giovanni to hell.
