Shijingshan District, located in western Beijing, gets its name from a sacred mountain named Shijing. The total area of the district is 84.38 square kilometers, with a population of 634,000. It administers eight sub-district offices and one community service center. As a traditional industrial area in Beijing's history, Shijingshan District has the main characteristics brought on by the development of the local economy and social transformation.

1. Shijingshan District has obvious advantages with its geographical location. Shijingshan District is one of six urban districts in Beijing, only 14 kilometers away from Tiananmen Square and 40 minutes' drive from Beijing Capital International Airport. The district boasts a convenient and speedy transportation network.

2. Shijingshan District has a beautiful natural environment. The district has a scenic landscape. It is near mountains and close to the Yongding River. Three mountains, eight temples and 12 scenic areas constitute the beautiful surroundings of the district. Twenty-three percent of the district is mountainous. The district's urban green coverage rate reaches 50.29 percent, and the per capita green area is 107.7 square meters. The district boasts the most abundant forest resources and the highest green coverage in Beijing's urban districts, giving it the largest per capita public green area in Beijing's newly-developed districts.

There are rich tourism and cultural resources in the district. The area has many sites to see, including the following: The Lingguang Temple, famous for housing the Buddha tooth relic; Fa Hai Temple, which houses exquisite frescoes dating back to Ming-dynasty court; the Olympic competition and training venues; Shijingshan Amusement Park; the Beijing International Sculpture Park. Shijingshan District is appropriate for trade, living and tourism.

3. Shijingshan District has a clear development goal. According to Beijing city planning, Shijingshan District is to be developed into the city function development zone, city function center, comprehensive service center, as well as a cultural entertainment center.

The district's long-term development "action plan" is formulated the construction from a "three step" CRD development strategy. According to the development strategy, Shijingshan District identified the new industrial system with the modern service industry as the main body and the high-tech as the leading industry. Development priorities have been given to five industries, namely cultural and creative, high-tech, business services, modern finance and tourism.

The district government endeavors to build a development pattern that comprises "one axis" (Chang'an Avenue West Extension comprehensive development axis), “one zone” (Yongding River Green Ecological Development Zone), "one core" (the new Shougang high-end integrated services zone), "one park" (Shijingshan Zone of Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park), and "supportive sectors" (six business zone)

It also strives to build eight high-end systems, including: a high-end service industry system; a high-tech and a cultural integration system; high-end city planning, construction and operation system; high-end ecological civilization system; high-end cultural life system; high-end livelihood security system; high-end social governance system and the high-end human resources management system.

4. In terms of space, Shijingshan District has a large amount of open space for development than the city center, especially following the relocation of Shougang Group, which leaves 8.56 square kilometers of land unoccupied.

Geographically, Shijingshan District stands at a joint area between the Chang'an Avenue development axis and the West Development Zone, which will play an important role for future development and reform of the capital city. At present, the Beijing city government attaches more and more importance to the development of the western part of Chang'an Avenue. Its next development priority is the city's western areas, which has seen a new opportunity to push forward Shijingshan District's new phase of transformation and development.

From a policy perspective, the "four areas" construction strategy, which mainly includes the "national service comprehensive reform pilot area", the building of a national insurance industry park, Zhongguancun National Internet finance industrial base, an international tourism headquarter base, , a new strategic sci-tech achievement transformation base and Overseas Chinese Creation and Innovation Development Zone have all provided rare development opportunities for Shijingshan District.

Shijingshan District will undergo development in accordance with a general goal of advancing steadily to become top-notch, continuously pushing forward an all-round, in-depth transformation, high-end green development strategy, and strive to achieve the target of being developed into a model area for green transformation development.
