II: A Dream of Red Mansions (March 2nd)
JIA Baoyu visits the great void dreamland, where he gets the music and lyrics of The Dream of Red Mansions.

The imperial concubine Yuanchun gives away Dragon Boat Festival presents, showing her support for the “engagement”. Daiyu feels sad and buries fallen flowers.

WANG Xifeng hounds Second Sister YOU to death, bringing about a thorough search of the Grand View Garden. The imperial concubine Yuanchun dies, and Baoyu’s psychic jade is lost. Yingchun passes away, Tanchun marries far, Xiangyun and Baochai move out, and Baoyu goes insane. WANG Xifeng offers advice to arrange a “warding-off” wedding with the bride stealthily substituted for another.

Sister Fool spills the beans, and Daiyu gets to know the truth of marriage. She then burns the handkerchief down and perishes. Baoyu steps into the bridal chamber, only to know that he has been cheated.

The JIA Family’s property is confiscated on an imperial order—WANG Xifeng dies with shame, Miaoyu is kidnapped, the Lady Dowager passes away, Xichun becomes a nun, and Xiangyun is widowed. The Grand View Garden is deserted in a flash.

Baoyu, in bad health, goes to the Bamboo Lodge to hold a memorial ceremony for Daiyu. In a trance, he seems to see Daiyu’s ghost, and suddenly understands: life is nothing more than a long dream. As a rock that has “strayed into the world of mortals and stayed there for many years”, he has experienced the sweets and bitters of life and finally returned to the wildernesses of space in search of immortals.

Synopsis

I: A Dream of Red Mansions (March 1st)

A hard rock is left unused when Goddess Nüwa mending the sky. The rock admires for the bustling world of mortals, so it is reborned into a rich family. A boy is borned with this piece of jade, and named JIA Baoyu (precious jade). He and his younger female cousin LIN Daiyu live in the RONG Mansion. They are innocent playmates and appreciate each other. They read The Romance of West Chamber together and started to understand love. However, LIN Daiyu is often down because XUE Baochai has been “betrothed” to JIA Baoyu.

JIA Zheng, Baoyu’s father mistakenly believes that Baoyu has an affair with an actress, and Baoyu’s brother JIA Huan falsely accuses Baoyu that he is the one who should be blamed for JIN Chuaner’s death. JIA Zheng is very mad and whips Baoyu relentlessly. Several girls visits Baoyu, who further realizes the preciousness of girls. Then Daiyu visits Baoyu, who gives a handkerchief with a poem by her, and they demonstrate their love for each other.

Yuanchun is chosen as an imperial concubine and pays a visit to her parents in a few days. The JIA Family donates money to build a garden. During this period, WANG Xifeng murders people for money. JIA Zheng shows the proteges around in the garden, where Baoyu showcases his talent by reciting poems. The JIA Family displays their wealth and reputation by holding a grand banquet for the imperial concubine. The entire family greatly honoured.

II: A Dream of Red Mansions (March 2nd)

Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre

On June 22th, 1957, the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre opened under the care of Premier ZHOU Enlai. Minister of Culture SHEN Yanbing hosted the inaugural meeting, and Deputy Premier CHEN Yi addressed the meeting.

Over the past 50 years, artists at Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre have inherited and created excellent operas, such as The Peony Pavilion, The Romance of West Chamber, The Palace of Eternal Life, Incidents of the Southern Tang Dynasty and The Dream of Red Mansions, winning high praise from people of all circles and experts, as well as many grand awards at various national art festivals.

On May 18th, 2001, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) put China’s Kunqu Opera art on the first list of “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”, thus affirming the cultural characteristics of the Kunqu Opera and its special value in the diversified development of human culture. The Kunqu Opera has become a cultural buzzword and has risen in popularity in China and all over the world.
