In order to create this work, the NCPA takes two years to make preparations. Invited by the NCPA, a large number of outstanding creation professionals in the domestic drama industry have made field researches in Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Tangshan, Xuzhou, Huai'an, Nanjing and other provinces and cities nationwide. They gain down-to-earth life experiences, collect plenty of vivid and lively creation materials, read up historical materials, and interview numeorous experts and scholars. The drama script is repeatedly revised and refined. Playwright LI Baoqun, director GONG Xiaodong, set designer ZHANG Wu, lighting designer XING Xin, costume and makeup designer DING Jiyan, composer LI Hui, physique designer LI Na and other capable artists, famous performers such as WU Jing’an, HONG Tao, YIN Shixian, ZONG Ping, ZENG Yongti and the outstanding young members of NCPA Drama Ensemble jointly present this play.

Through this artwork, the NCPA commission drama The Crossroad is expected to cherish the memory of those heroes. This drama is not only offered for all audiences, but also for the great era.

The drama The Crossroad is not only an NCPA repertoire in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the PRC, but also a whole-hearted work dedicated to countless heroes who have sacrificed their lives for the country.

Synopsis

In the winter of 1948, a blizzard hits the Yangtze-Huaihe River Valleys, where the Kuomintang and Communist armies have waged a decisive battle to determine the destiny of China.

A far-famed Anti-Japanese force, part of the Northwest Army, and four famous Anti-Japanese generals, who have performs valiantly in the war against Japanese aggressors, are making a very tough final decision…Ma Ze’an, ZHANG Yufeng, ZHENG Yihu and ZHOU Keren become sworn brothers amid the flames of war and make agreed to stick together in life and death. Where is the road ahead? Everyone is at the crossroad.

On the snowy dark night, the soldiers on the battlefield and their family members in the army camps are also making a choice about their future.

It’s snowing more heavily with the winds blowing harder and harder, and everybody’s heart is disturbed by the confusion, befuddlement, anxiety, determination, desire, and dream.

The long night gives way to daybreak, and there comes the singing of the Shaanxi Opera smashing the windy and snowy winter in the sun rising slowly from a distance.

Throughout his life, a man may have to make a choice at all times when a great era is arriving. The long river of history flows forward perpetually, leaving behind different destinies. As it did so in the past, so does it today and will do tomorrow...

NCPA Drama Ensemble

NCPA Drama Ensemble was established on July 28th, 2016 and the renowned Chinese actor PU Cunxin was invited to be the Artistic Director. After rounds of screening across the country, 22 members were selected out of a number of professional actors to become the first and the second batch of actors for the team. Having received professional trainings on lines, performance, vocal performance, and body shaping, they finally appeared on the stage of NCPA. As another resident performance troupe following the China NCPA Orchestra, the China NCPA Chorus, and the NCPA Octet, the NCPA Drama Ensemble will focus on rehearsing dramas and participating in other NCPA productions.

NCPA Drama Ensemble has taken part in several NCPA productions, including The LEI Family,the Royal Architects, Returning Home on a Snowy Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Jane Eyre, The Tragedy of Hamlet,Prince of Denmark, King Lear, The Merchant of Venice, Look West to Chang'an, the Birds, etc., and the Ensemble is to present more exciting works in the future.
