About

The Peking Opera New Dragon Gate Inn is co-produced by the Shanghai Hong & Mei Cultural Communications Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Jingju Theatre Company based on the Hong Kong film of the same title. This peking opera deconstructs the plot from a traditional operatic aesthetic perspective. The story is acted out with the traditional techniques, presented in the spirit of traditional opera to highlight the truth, goodness and beauty of humanity. This piece carries forward the Chinese people’s patriotism and revitalizes the classic. It took more than three years to produce the Peking Opera New Dragon Gate Inn. The opera features a great production team and cast, who strive to compose a representative work for the operatic circle.

Synopsis

During the reign of Emperor Yingzong of Ming, the general ZHOU Huai’an, in order to protect a loyal minister’s only child, runs to west to hide from the Dong Chang’s mob. He gets help from the chivalrous girl QIU Moyan and Dragon Gate Inn keeper JIN Xiangyu, with whom he is romantically involved with. The good and the evil go into battle of wits against each other.

SHI Yihong Peking Opera Artist

As a national A-list actress, SHI Yihong (original name SHI Min) is the main Dan (female role) of MEI School from Shanghai Peking Opera Troupe amd is good at performing as Dan (female role). She studied with the famous actress and Peking opera educator ZHANG Meijuan, as well as an expert in opera vocal music LU Wenqin. In 1999, she graduated from the first session of postgraduate courses for Chinese excellent young actors of Peking Opera. Starting with Wu Dan (martial role), SHI Yihong devoted herself to studying the arts of MEI School, adept with both singing and martial role, equipping herself with a distinctive style, becoming a leading role with era characteristics. She is skilled in acting such traditional and classical plays as Legendary Fighter - Family YANG's Heroines, Madam White Snake, Farewell to My Concubine, The Drunken Concubine and Zhaojun Outside the Frontier. Besides, with constant innovations, she also produced and made up the Peking Opera version based on the famous work Notre Dame de Paris written by Hugo, and acted in The Unicorn Purse, a play of CHENG School different from her own school, participated in the performance of the multi-media music drama Door made by TAN Dun and the century symphony concert 2000 Today, as well as acted in the 2012 The Peony Pavilion, etc.

In January 2013 and October 2013, she made a series of performances named “SHI Yihong: All-round Actress for Martial & Singing Role and Kunqu & Peking Opera” at the NCPA and Shanghai Yifu Theatre respectively. She performed independently five traditional Kunqu & Peking Opera plays, namely, Yutangchun, Madam White Snake, The Peony Pavilion, The Reunion and MU Guiying, and acted as various roles including main Dan, Daoma Dan (sword-and-horse role), Wu Dan (martial role), Guimen Dan (boudoir-door role), having great influence.

She has been honoured with various awards such as The Star of Chinese Peking Opera, Plum Blossom Prize, The Magnolia Award and The Leading Talent of Shanghai. On October 15th, 2014, she was invited to Beijing to attend the Culture and Art Forum. On September 29th, 2015, she was selected as Vice Chairman of Shanghai Dramatists Association. On April 19th, 2016, as a partner, she founded Shanghai Hong & Mei Cultural Communication Co., Ltd. together with Professor MEI Jianping from Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, putting forward the advertising video Never Stop and SHI Yihong's national tour "Take Advantage of Elegance and Talent". In the same year, serving as the art director, she put forward a field performance "Star Selects Performance" at the Shanghai Grand Theatre and obtained effective results. From April 22nd, 2016 to October 21st, 2017, successively in such cities as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chongqing, and Linyi, dozens of quintessence performances were held in SHI Yihong's national tour "Take Advantage of Elegance and Talent" jointly produced by Shanghai Peking Opera Troupe and planned by Shanghai Hong & Mei Cultural Communication Co., Ltd. During September 12th-25th, 2017, SHI Yihong and the famous performing artist for Peking Opera Mr. SHANG Changrong went to Metropolitan Museum of Art and Princeton University to perform more than ten performances of the Peking Opera Farewell to My Concubine, achieving numerous honours and opening up a new communication mode for the Chinese culture.

The “MEI-SHANG-CHENG-XUN SHI Yihong” gave a successful solo performance at the Shanghai Grand Theatre, NCPA and Hong Kong Cultural Centre on May 1st, 2018, September 22nd-23rd, 2018 and December 30th, 2018 respectively. SHI performed the four famous female role players’ classics in homage to tradition. On such a grand occasion, she made new achievements and gained critical acclaim from both insiders and outsiders, winning a better reputation in art circles.
