The heart of the emblem is a round eastern shield. The white winged Saxon leopard is located against a background of the purple fortress wall in the dark blue shield. His representation is realized in Scythian- savage style. Leopard wears a golden crown in the form of Kazakh khans’ head-dress. The crown symbolizes Supreme consecration of the town history –with bravery and self-sacrifice of the last khan of Kazakhs Kenessary, with wisdom and courage of the first President of the Republic, who made a significant decision about capital transfer of a new-born state. Purple fortress wall remembers the history of town origination as a fortress, a military outpost. White colour symbolizes nobility and purity of thoughts. Heraldic shield frames by stripe of gold wheaten ears that symbolize world renown and region fame as world-wide known valuable and strong sort of granary and as town-capital of the bread rich land. Ears are framed by gold border.  Above the shield is Shanyrak, the symbol of Kazakh nation hearth. In lower side is a bird – gold stripe with the word “Astana” in straight type.

The coat is realized with the observance of international heraldic symbolism canons. A colour and graphic symbolism conceptually and semantically reproduce the emblem that contains town historical events in symbolic kind, connected with persons who played a significant role in state formation and country development.
