Mayor Gábor Demszky

Mr. Gábor Demszky was born in 1952 in Budapest. He obtained his certificate of secondary education in 1970, and became a student of the Faculty of Law and Political Science at ELTE. In 1972, he was expelled from the university, charged with subversive political activity. Later he was allowed to carry on with his studies and he earned his degree in law in 1976. Between 1971–81 he earned a degree in sociology at the Faculty of Arts of ELTE.

 

He worked for Világosság, a periodical, until 1981, and he concurrently was involved in research work organised by István Kemény, an eminent Hungarian figure in the science of sociology. In 1979, Mr. Demszky signed the statement declaring solidarity with Charta '77 and he was a founding member of SZETA (Fund to Support the Poor), one of the opposition groups of the regime.

 

Because of his political activities he lost his job, and a travel and publication moratorium was imposed on him. At the end of 1981, he launched AB Független Kiadó (AB Independent Publishing House) jointly with László Rajk and he was involved in publishing several samizdat periodicals. In 1988, he was one of the founding members of the Network of Free Initiatives and then SZDSZ.

 

He was elected Member of Parliament for District VII during the 1990 parliamentary elections. In October 1990, he was elected Mayor of Budapest at the inaugural meeting of the General Assembly – indirectly, in accordance with the law effective then. He was directly re-elected as Mayor of Budapest at the local government elections on 11th of December, 1994 and also won the confidence of the electorate of Budapest at the 1998, 2002 and 2006 elections.

 

 

Deputy Mayor Miklós Hagyó

As Deputy Mayor responsible for public utilities and asset management, Mr. Hagyó takes care of tasks regarding city operations (public utilities, public services, mass transportation, road maintenance, parking, etc.), asset management, asset utilization, property administration and also issues regarding the professional operating duties of companies providing public services, property management along with development tasks of the departments assigned to him.

 

Mr. Hagyó takes care of housing issues, urban rehabilitation regarding housing management, environmental management, environment protection (clean air and noise protection) and sports outside schools (physical training).

Co-operating with Deputy Mayor Mr. Imre Ikvai-Szabó, Mr. Hagyó takes care of European Union duties regarding the municipality, the regional affairs (central region, agglomeration) and tasks involving the strategic Urban Development Concept of Budapest.

 

He was born in 1967 in Jászberény and he lived in the Jászság with his parents until the age of fourteen. A direct way led from the farming family to the food industrial secondary high school close to Sopron, then to Szeged where Mr. Hagyó earned his food engineer degree in 1989 at the School of Food Industry at the University of Gardening and Food Industry. Based on his achievement, along with ten of his classmates out of the 120 students, he got admission to the Budapest University of Gardening and Food Industry and received his second degree in food industrial engineering, majoring in management.

 

Mr. Hagyó was elected a member of the Parliament in the 2002 general elections from the national list of MSZP and from the Budapest area list of MSZP in the 2006 general elections. He has been a member of the General Assembly since October 2006. Mr. Hagyó is the general manager of the National Charitable Arm of MSZP and the founder of the Association for the European Hungary Movement. Chairman of the XII. District organization of MSZP, member of the party’s National Electors and founding member of the Mozaik Klub for young politicians.

 

 

Deputy Mayor Csaba Horváth

As Deputy Mayor responsible for cultural and educational affairs, he looks after cultural, educational and healthcare matters, youth politics, children and youth protection, affairs of the disabled, employment politics, tasks of the so-called ’patience zones’ and civilized dog keeping.

 

He is also responsible for the cooperation with the Churches, and he acts on behalf of the mayor in issues related to the operation of the local governments of minorities of Budapest.

 

He was born in Budapest on 19th November 1969, he is married, and he is the father of one child. He studied social politics and sociology in the faculty of arts of the Janus Pannonius University in Pécs. Afterwards he earned a diploma in human management in the university’s faculty for Adult Training and Human Resources Development.

 

He worked for Matav Co. Ltd. as a technical officer from 1988. Between 1991-1993 he was the general manager of Molland Clip Ltd., and between 1994-2002 he was the general manager of VIP Clip Communication Ltd.

Since 1998 he has been the expert of the Committee of Healthcare and Social Politics of MSZP, since 1999 he has been board member of the Socialist Party’s Organisation of District II. From the autumn of 2002 he was the member of the Budapest board of MSZP, and from October 2002 he was the Mayor of District II of Budapest.

 

He has been member of the Parliament since April 2002, a member of the Economic Committee of the Parliament, and the chairman of the Infrastructure and Housing Affairs Subcommittee of the Parliament. In the autumn of 2004 he was elected vice president of the Budapest Council of the Socialist Party and the coordinator of the Budapest Program.

 

 Deputy Mayor Imre Ikvai-Szabó

As Deputy Mayor takes care of tasks related to the budget (planning of the budgetary concept and the budgetary- and source sharing decrees, the modifications of the budgetary decree and the submission of the budgetary reports to the General Assembly), and responsible for all duties related to social politics, IT, urban- regenerations and development, value preservation of areas, large programmes, tourism, PR activities.

 

Co-operating with Deputy Mayor Miklós Hagyó, he takes care of European Union duties regarding the capital city, the regional affairs (central region, agglomeration) and tasks involving the strategic Urban Development Concept of Budapest.

 

Mr. Ikvai takes care of tasks regarding the management of public utility companies owned by the Municipality of Budapest, and sole and commonly held companies – especially tasks like the approval of the annual business plans and annual reports, the financing tasks stipulated in the public utility contracts and tasks related to the determination of the tariffs for public services.

He was born in 1960 in the city of Kaposvar. He earned a degree in teaching but also has qualifications in military. Between 1982-1987 he served in the military and than later he studied social politics and health economics on ELTE.

Since 1995 he has been working for the Municipality, first as a social politics counsellor at the Health and Social Policy deputy mayor’s office then later as head of the office. He had a main role in creating the Health map of Budapest (I-II) and The Social Chart of Budapest in 1996-1997, ha also created the Long term social development plan of the city.

 

Between 2001-2002 he worked on the health program of the Municipality before appearing on the poll list of SZDSZ in 2002. Since that time he has been a member of the SZDSZ fraction in the General Assembly and between 2002-2004 he was the chairman of both the Social politics and Urban Committee and the Health Committee.

 

 

Chief Clerk Zsolt Tiba

As Chief Clerk, Mr. Tiba is responsible for the implementation of tasks related to the operation of the Municipality of Budapest and he manages the Mayor’s Office.

 

Zsolt Tiba was born in Budapest in 1964. He earned his degree in law in 1988 and passed his law qualification exam in 1991. His first employer was a council office in one of the districts in Budapest, later he worked at the Tax and Financial Audit Office (APEH).

 

He engaged in work at the Municipal Council in the spring of 1989. From the end of 1991, he worked as one of the de­puties of the Chief Clerk in the Mayor’s Office.

 

Following a competitive application procedure, he was nominated Chief Clerk of the Municipality of Budapest by the General Assembly in 1992.
