In order to constantly improve the quality of higher education in China, Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China has implemented the following projects:

Project 985: In May 1998, the state leaders of China called for "in order to achieve modernization, our country must have a number of first-class universities with world's advanced levels". Accordingly, Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China determined to put focus on supporting partial colleges and universities to create the first-class university and high-level university in the world in the implement of "21st Century Education Revitalization Project".

There are 9 colleges and universities that have entered the Project in Beijing, namely: Tsinghua University, Peking University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing Normal University, China Agricultural University, Minzu University of China, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Project 211: It is an education construction project that the Chinese Government put forward to mainly construct about 100 colleges and universities and 1000 key disciplines in the 21st century. Among them, 24 colleges and universities in Beijing have entered this project, namely:

The project of "building an internationally renowned, domestic first-class arts institutions of high level". It mainly supports the following universities: Beijing Film Academy, Beijing Dance Academy, The National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, and The China Conservatory.
