Author Synopsis :

Yu Changhai entered the Beijing Third Jade Production Cooperative in 1956 as an apprentice and began the study of jade carving from famous craftsmen Li Huanting and Xu Maolin. In 1962, he took part in the training course for applying the techniques of the main arts and crafts schools. In this training course, he studied carving techniques of famous artists, and fine arts theory. He later began of create work by himself.

Yu`s works feature a carful use of materials, exquisite craftsmanship, fine carving, and a use of various types of skills according to materials ,and are elegant and simpe, generous and tasteful. Yu has broken nwe paths in selection of themes and skills.

Yu eas an advisor during the production of the "Four National Treasures," and was one of the designers for "Censer with Prosperity Pattern," one of the four treasues which won the national Hundred-Flower Awards for Exxcellent Arts and Crafts` Golden Cup for rare pieces in 1990. With his "Arhat Censer" he won the national Hundred-Flower Awards for Excellent Arts an d Crafts` first prize for creativity and design in 1982. His "Win Set Inlaid with Gems and Pressed with Golden Wires" won the national Hundred-Flower Awards for Excellent Arts and Crafts` second prize for ingenious conception and design in 1984.
