Author Synopsis :
Wang Shusen was born into a jade-carving family. At the age of 13 he began to learn jade carving from his father. Already an experienced artist in his 20s in jade-carving circles, he was well known by the 1940s in Beijing for carving statues of Buddha and immortals.
After the founding of New China, with the help of Mr. Xu Beihong, Wang edtered the Central Academy of Fine Arts for further study and to modernize his artistic theory. Since then, he has created many excellent carvings, attaining high requte in jade-carving circles for his salient artistic style. His works are famous for their carefully selected material, superd skill, novel design, unique and vivid form, and wonderful hues.
Between 1982 and 1989, the Beijing Jade Factory was entrusted with the task of producing for the State Council four jadeite treasure (commonly referred to as the "Four National Treasures"). Wang headed the research and production gruop.
His work "A Waterfall in the Mountains" was added to the collection of the Bejing Museum of Arts and Crafts in 1972.
Another work, "Pendant of Joy" won the national Hundred-Flower Awards for Excellent Arts and Crafts` Golden Cup for rare pieces in 1981. |
