The Janggoo is the representative instrument for jangdan which refers to various rhythmic units among the Korean drum family. It is widely used as a principle rhythmic percussion instrument in not only Aak and jeong-ak, but also in sock-ak. It is also used in accompaniment of Korean dances.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government determined forsythia as the flower of Seoul on April 3, 1971. The flower is considered to be most suitable for Seoul's climate. This flower comes into full bloom in early spring and demonstrates the cooperative spirit of Seoul's citizens.
Korea was once primarily an agricultural nation, and Koreans have cultivated rice as their staple food since ancient times. These days Korean cuisine is characterized by a wide variety of meat and fish dishes along with wild greens and vegetables.
The Korean costume is called hanbok. It is characterized by simple lines and no pockets. The women’s hanbok comprise a wrap skirt and a bolero-like jacket, and the men’s, roomy pants bound at the ankles and a short jacket. Hanbok are worn by Koreans of all ages, particularly on traditional holidays and when attending social affairs having a Korean overtone.
