As Beijing further adjusts its economic structure, relocates non-capital functions and continues efforts to establish a high-grade, precision and advanced economic structure, the amount and speed of Beijing's permanent population has dropped. At the end of 2016, Beijing had almost 22 million permanent residents. It is planned that the population won't exceed 23 million by 2020.

Beijing is China´s first city where people from the country's 56 ethnic groups can be found living here. The biggest ethnic groups are Han, Manchu, Hui, Mongo, Korean and Tujia groups. Health indicators of Beijing residents took the lead in China.

The average life expectancy reached 81.9 years. This is mainly due to better medical availability and changes of people's lifestyle.

In recent years, Beijing has strengthened its ties with other countries and regions. With now 54 sister cities in 49 countries, Beijing is connected to all continents of this world.
