Temporary Visitors
A temporary visitor is a person who stays for a period of no longer than 1 2 months. The belongings of a temporary visitor who is leaving the country should not exceed travel needs.
When entering China, a temporary visitor may carry clothing and accessories, arts and crafts and the following products worth up to a maximum of 1.000 yuan.Two tax-free bottles of alcoholic beverage(1.5 litre maximum)and two cartons of cigarettes(400 cigarette maximum).
Permitted personal use items (one only of each)include: camera, portable radio/cassette player. portable video camera and portable word processor. Visitors carrying such items should take the "items to Declare" channel when coming through customs to transact relevant procedures and carry the articles with them when leaving China.
Long-term Visitors
Foreign embassy staff and embassy officials in China, UN and the specialized agencies and international organization's representatives in China and their staff spouses and dependant children may bring personal-use items and daily necessities, including furniture, household appliances, kitchenware, food, clothing, magazines and other reading materials, and motor vehicles Articles classed as daily necessities enjoy duty-free and no-inspection status.
Long-term foreign experts who come to work in China are eligible to apply to the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China for a status which allows for impels of some daily necessities duty free.
Permanent staff of foreign enterprises involved in foreign investment, foreign experts, foreign journalists and foreign overseas students and other long term visitor should follow the procedures of China Customs as applies to non-residents entering and exiting.

For foreign experts (including specialists from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), books and reference material, research equipment, tools and samples within a reasonable amount are exempt from tariffs.
Queries regarding the eligibility of items for such exemptions, or regarding the importation or exportation of goods because of special circumstances should be directed to the relevant administrative department.
