The expressway and the new airport north line expressway serving Beijing's new airport -- Beijing Daxing International Airport, are scheduled to open in July 2019, said a person in charge at the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport on Nov. 14.
In addition, the Beijing-Xiongan Expressway will start construction soon. In the future, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines will be extended to Yanjiao, a town on the outskirts of Beijing.
New Airport Railway Line (Phase 1) to be on trial operation next year
The Beijing Daxing International Airport is a super-large integrated aviation transportation hub located between Daxing district of Beijing and Guangyang district of Langfang city, Hebei province. With the new airport to open next year, the new airport expressway and the new airport north line expressway will also be put to use. These two expressways are expected to be connected in July 2019. At that time, people will be able to reach the new airport through the Beijing-Taipei Expressway and the Beijing-Kaifeng Expressway, said Zhao Yang, director of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Traffic Integration Coordination Office under the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport.
She said that the New Airport Railway Line (Phase 1) is scheduled to be commissioned together with the new airport in September next year. The first phase of the railway line is 41 kilometers in length, going through Fengtai and Daxing districts. From north to south, the railway stops at three stations: Caoqiao Station, Cigezhuang Station and New Airport North Terminal Station. A car depot will be set at Cigezhuang, and an area to the north of the airport is reserved for the construction of a parking lot. The design speed of the railway is 160 kilometers per hour.
Great Outer Ring Cargo Passage to bypass Beijing
This year has seen several important expressways completed and opened to traffic in Beijing. On Aug. 20, the Greater Outer Ring Expressway (Tongzhou-Daxing Section) around Beijing officially opened to traffic. However, with the urban expansion there might be some adjustments with the ring road.
Previously, the outer-ring expressway was set mainly for the use of trucks and vans. With the expansion of Beijing's sub-centers, the population density along the Beijing section of the Great Outer Ring Expressway is growing bigger. Considering the emissions from large trucks, the originally planned freight corridor function is no longer suitable. To this end, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei transportation authorities have formulated a new plan to redirect the cargo corridor out of the Greater Outer Ring Expressway. The plan has been submitted to the Ministry of Transport for approval.
In addition, the Daxing-Yanqing Expressway and the Yanqing-Chongli Expressway are well under construction, which are both support transport projects for the XXIV Olympic Winter Games. The former is scheduled to open to traffic at the end of this year, the plain section of the latter (Beijing section) will open at the end of the year, too. The entire Yanqing-Chongli Expressway is scheduled to open at the end of 2019. In addition, the Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway will also open to traffic at the end of next year.
Construction of Beijing-Xiongan Expressway to start soon
In the next few years, the traffic link from Beijing to Xiongan will be the priority of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei traffic integration on the agenda of the transport authorities.
The Beijing-Xiongan Expressway is expected to start construction in the near future, and the project is now well advancing. At the same time, the construction on the Xiongan High-speed Railway Station will commence on Dec. 1 and is scheduled to complete by March 31, 2020, according to a tender announcement.
Once open, passengers will be able to use the intercity railway to go to Xiongan from Beijing. The Phase-1 Project of Beijing-Xiong'an Intercity Railway, going from the Beijingxi Railway Station to the New Airport, will be extended to Xiong'an.
According to the master plan of Xiong'an, a high-speed railway network featuring four vertical and two horizontal routes will be constructed in the area. The four vertical ones are the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, the Jiongxiong-Xiongshang section of the Beijing-Hong Kong-Taiwan Railway, the Jingxiong-Shixiong Intercity Railway, and the New District-New Airport Railway; the two horizontal railways are the Tianjin-Baoding Railway and the Xinxiong Section from the Tianjin-Xiongan Intercity Railway to the Beijing-Kunming Railway.
From the macro perspective, high-speed railway projects such as the Beijing-Shenyang Railway, the Hohhot-Zhangjiakou Railway and the Datong-Zhangjiakou Railway are also being planned. When talking about the public transport connection between the northern three counties of Langfang and Beijing, Zhao said a number of “P+R” integrated bus stations will be built at Yanjiao and Dachang (Hebei province) and other areas. Commuters are advised to drive to the bus stations to take a bus ride to downtown Beijing. Zhao added that the transport authorities are considering to extend Beijing's BRT lines to Yanjiao. For instance, BRT lines may be set along the Beijing-Harbin Expressway and the Beijing-Tongliao Expressway.
For the next step, Zhao said, Beijing will make great efforts to build BRT lines at big stations so that passengers can transfer to other means of public transport within 10 minutes.
