After the stroll through Prince Gong's Mansion, we wandered through the Hutong south of Houhai to come to No. 2 Quadrangle in the Xiao Xiang Feng Hutong. Seemingly simple from the outside, we soon learned that inside was not only a beautiful old Chinese home, but also a bit of culture that was wonderful to see firsthand. We started off our experience here by sitting down in the center of the courtyard at a table where we were shown a tea ceremony. Our hostess delicately handled each cup, the tea, and all of her utensils to perform the ceremony flawlessly in front of us. Afterward, she explained what the purpose of each part was, the animal statues for good fortune, the constant washing of the cups to keep it pure, the washing of the leaves, and the Pu'er tea that was simply delicious. The surroundings couldn't have been any more beautiful either, a traditional Chinese home with art and statues surrounding us. Following the ceremony, we were led back to a quite gazebo within a garden where we got to try our hand at some calligraphy. I will have to admit, I was far from a gifted calligrapher, but I did try to write my own name in Chinese (康益恩). Following our calligraphy, we took one last walk around the house and were led down the garden path back to the door. After being given a polite thank you and good bye, we took off towards our next destination.
