Our final stop for the day was the Residence of Soong Ching-ling, and what also used to be a Qing Dynasty garden. This looked out from the northern edge of Houhai Lake, and is probably one of the best properties on the lake, lucky for Soong Ching-ling. For those of you who do not know, Soong Ching-ling was the wife of Sun Yat-sen, and she was given this property after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Her history, as well as many artifacts from her life, is preserved in a museum on the property. We walked through the museum, looking at her time working for the Republic of China, and wife to the father of China as well as her time after the founding of the People's Republic of China. She was certainly an amazing woman for her time. After the museum, we walked through a section of the garden to get to the house she lived in. The house has been preserved with the furniture and decorations that were from Soong Ching-ling, and gave a cool glance into history right in front of us. Exiting the house, we entered the main gardens that contained a small lake, a river and many rock formations. As we watched the sun begin to set from the gardens, we strolled down the path and took in the beauty of the area. After a quick swing on her swing-set, we left the gardens to walk around Houhai Lake. As the sunset over the lake, we definitely felt at peace with the natural and historical beauty that surrounded us.
