The "2008 Nobel Winners Beijing Forum" is to be held on November 11-14. Under the everlasting theme of "The Harmony and Development of the Human Kind", and with a focus on the annual topic of "Information & Innovation".
The forum will invite top scholars from all over the world, especially the Nobel winners, to give academic lectures and preside over forums on subject matters, to carry out multi-level discussions and exchanges on academic, social and industrial issues so as to provide a high-level platform for the Nobel winners, Chinese scholars, and Chinese government officials to exchange ideas, to have practical dialogues and to have international cooperation.
The forum will introduce to China's academia and industry the frontier theories and latest trends in natural sciences and social sciences in today's world so as to provide decision-making support in implementing the scientific outlook on development, enhancing self-innovation ability, constructing an innovative country, and building a harmonious society.
At the same time, through organizing high-standard multi-level academic activities, building up the unique brand of "Academic Beijing", and shaping Beijing's image as an international city and a famous cultural city, the forum strives to better serve the harmonious economic and social development of China's capital.
The forum is sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Beijing Municipal Government, with Lu Yongxiang, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Guo Jinlong, mayor of Beijing, as chairpersons of the forum's organizing committee.
The Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) are the forum's supporting units. There are six undertaking units: The Bureau of International Cooperation under the CAS, Foreign Affairs Office under Beijing Municipal Government, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, the Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission (BMSTC), the Administrative Committee of Zhongguancun Science Park and the Beijing Association of Science and Technology, with 12 member units including the Organization Department, under the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Publicity Department, under the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, the General Office of Beijing Municipal Government, the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau, the Beijing Municipal Finance Bureau, the Beijing Municipal Administration Commission, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture, the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, the Research Office of Beijing Municipal Government, the Beijing Port Office, the Beijing People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and the Beijing Tourism Group.
The main activities of the Forum include the Opening Ceremony, Information and Innovation Strategy Forum, the academic forums, the CAS High-level Academic Seminar on Information and Innovation, the Zhongguancun Forum, and other theme exhibitions and school-related activities.
Beijing TV Station (BTV), and www.qianlong.com will give live broadcasts of the opening ceremony and related activities of the Forum.
The Forum has invited 7 Nobel winners, and 4 Turing Award winners, to be present at the Forum in Beijing. During the Forum, the honored guests will deliver many speeches, the topics of which range from New Types of Materials for the Development of Modern Information Technologies, Research Directions Supporting the Information Age, A New Century of Particle Physics, to the Science Behind Information Technology, the Nobel Prizes, and the Future of Sciences, etc.
During the Forum, the honored guests will also pay a visit to related research institutes and laboratories under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and give reports.
Some of the honored guests from overseas will go to five institutions of higher learning, including the Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, and Peking University to have academic exchanges and accept their conferment as honorary professors. They will also go to high schools to communicate and interact with students.
