The Spring Festival, known as Chun Jie, marks the beginning of a new lunar calendar year. The beginning of the new year is celebrated throughout China and through many parts of Asia. It is a central holiday for many communities, and is often celebrated with family gatherings, lavish dinners, festivities, and media events. 2011 is a rabbit year, keep a look out for rabbit themed decorations in the festivities! There are many events to participate in and performances to see: temple fairs which are scheduled in parks and temples throughout Beijing, and traditional performances like the ceremony celebrating Heaven taking place at the beginning of February in the Temple of Heaven.
